Text on the inside:
Poltava… Its history, which spans more than eight centuries, is a bright page of the national chronicle.
The city played a big role in the struggle of the peoples of our Motherland
for their freedom and independence. During the Northern War (1700-1721), Poltava withstood a two-month siege by the Swedes, and since then the Battle of Poltava has entered history alongside the Battle of the Ice, the Battle of Kulikovo, Grunwald and Borodino.
In the XVII-XVIII centuries, Poltava was one of the craft and trade centers of Left-Bank Ukraine. After the establishment of Soviet power in the city, industry began to develop rapidly. Already in the years of the first five-year plans, the country knew well the Poltava brand.
To all parts of the Soviet Union, printing machines, cotton yarn and other products were sent…
During the Great Patriotic War, the people of Poltava fought heroically against the fascist invaders. The names of the underground fighters of the “Unconquered Poltava” – the Komsomol organization, headed by Lala Ubeyvovk, will remain forever in the hearts of the people. The partisan movement was led by the underground regional committee of the party. The heroism of the liberators of the city is immortalized in the memorial of Soldier’s Glory, in monuments, steles.
After the war, the city was rebuilt anew. He received fraternal assistance from different parts of our country. From distant Siberia, trains with equipment for the locomotive repair plant, from the banks of the Volga – for the turbomechanical. The battles were still raging in Europe, and the factories and factories of Poltava were already giving products, needed by the front and the recovering country.
Poltava today is a large industrial and cultural city of the republic. Machine-building and metalworking industry is widely developed here. Products of artificial diamond and diamond tool plants, gas discharge lamps and “Electro-motor” are well known not only in the USSR, but also far beyond its borders.
In 1974, for the great achievements, achieved by the workers in the economic and cultural construction, and in connection with the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the city, it was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. Closely associated with Poltava are the names of outstanding figures of Ukrainian culture G. S. Skovoroda, N. A. Yaroshenko, A. V. Lunacharsky. Here were born the immortal “Aeneid”, “Natalka Poltavka”, “Soldier-magician”, the author of which is I. P. Kotlyarevsky. The city still continues the traditions of national culture.
Poltava is improving. Modern residential districts Almazny, Polovki, new ones are being built – Levada and Sady. The city over the smooth waters of the Vorskla attracts thousands of tourists. And those who have been here will never forget the hospitality and friendliness of the people of Poltava.
