Ochakov is one of those cities that entered our consciousness along with the very first concepts of national history and culture. Through his example, we learn the truth about the immensity of the vastness of the land of our Slavic ancestors; thanks to him we comprehend the secrets of their ancient existence; he left us evidence of the military valor and revolutionary fortitude of those who were associated with his fate.
History shows that already in the second millennium BC. e. People settled on the site of present-day Ochakov. Between the Black Sea and the Dnieper-Bug estuary, the ancient Slavs built a fortification, which, however, could not protect the local residents from the invasion of foreign conquerors: the last of them to settle here were the Turks. They built a powerful fortress by the sea and named it Achi-Kale, which is similar to the current name – Ochakov. This defensive structure occupied an advantageous strategic position and the efforts of Russia are understandable, which for centuries sought to take possession of the fortress, regain its ancestral possessions, and gain convenient access to the Black Sea. In 1788 this struggle ended in success. In the local military-historical museum named after. A.V. Suvorov collected unique evidence of those times: documents, things, weapons. The artist M. I. Samsonov created the diorama “Assault on the Ochakov Fortress.”
The names of those who particularly distinguished themselves in those battles “on the waters of Ochakov” are carved on the marble slabs, among which is M.I. Kutuzov. P. I. Bagration, M. B. Barclay de Tolly, M. I. Platov and A. A. Golovaty. A monument to Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov was erected opposite the museum. It was built with funds raised by the people. On the pedestal are the words of the great commander: Every person should have a “good” name. Personally, I saw this good name in the glory of my fatherland.”
The Ochakovites contributed a lot to the glory of the fatherland. They wrote more than one heroic page in the history of the city. Among the brightest of them is the feat of the “red lieutenant” from the cruiser “Ochakov” Pyotr Petrovich Schmidt. Now on the street that bears his name, in the house where in February 1906 the trial of the brave leader of the sailors who rebelled in Sevastopol in 1905 took place, a museum has been opened. And at the site of the execution of revolutionaries, on the island of Berezan, today there is a white stone sail-monument made by the hands of students from Odessa and Nikolaev. There is a monument to P.P. Schmidt in Ochakov itself. Here he stands on the captain’s bridge, intensely peering into the distance, and as if he sees “a young, renewed, happy Russia,” which he spoke about in his last word at the trial. He sees the Russia that working people fought for in 1917, defended on the civilian fronts, and fought until victory during the Great Patriotic War.
Soviet troops liberated the city on March 31, 1944. More than 2,000 Ochakovites fought at the front. There are also Heroes of the Soviet Union among them. This title was posthumously awarded to G.F. Potemkin, whose monument stands in the city center. And he was only 20. And today’s twenty-year-olds come here at any time of the year with flowers.
A lot of new things have appeared over the past decades in the form of Ochakov. It became a major fishing center in the Nikolaev region. The first mussel and oyster fish canning plant in the Soviet Union operates here. The raw materials for it are delivered by trawl fleet vessels. But the Ochakovites have already created their own experimental farm for breeding shellfish in the Yagorlytsky Bay. -Ochakov’s fame is also growing as a resort. Tens of thousands of vacationers flock here every year – here, where the summer heat is always softened by a gentle sea breeze, where the fine autumn days are long. And the Black Sea roars incessantly at the foot of the city, as if it is in a hurry to tell everyone more and more legends about ancient and modern Ochakov.
