Soviet Army Merit Badge – For Excellence in Military Service

The badge “Excellence in the Soviet Army” is a badge of the USSR Ministry of Defense to reward soldiers, sailors, sergeants and foremen for outstanding achievements in combat and military training and exemplary military discipline.

The badge was established by the order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR dated April 17, 1957 in accordance with the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR dated December 29, 1956.

The badge was awarded to soldiers, sailors, sergeants and foremen of conscript and long-term service, distinguished by impeccable military discipline, having received incentives for exemplary service, who received excellent grades in leading and good grades in other disciplines during the academic year. The badge was awarded once during the entire period of service in the Armed Forces of the USSR. The right to award badges had to: regiment commanders, as well as commanders and superiors who enjoy disciplinary rights equal to them, and above, who have the right to issue orders. The award was recorded on the military ID. For violation of military discipline or a careless attitude towards the performance of their official duties and combat and political training, military personnel could be deprived of their badge.

The badge was awarded to soldiers, sergeants and foremen of the Ground Forces and the country’s Air Defense Forces (except for the country’s air defense aviation), as well as soldiers, sergeants and foremen of formations and units not included in the branches of the Armed Forces. By order of the USSR Minister of Defense dated October 26, 1957, cadets of military schools were also included in the number of military personnel who could be awarded a badge.
The “Excellence in the Soviet Army” badge consists of a shield superimposed on a wreath of golden oak leaves bordering both sides of the shield. The branches of the wreath are intertwined with ribbon. The edges of the shield are bordered by an oxidized figured strip with dots symmetrically located on it.

At the top of the sign there is a disk covered with white enamel, in the middle of which there is a five-pointed star with the image of a hammer and sickle. The star is covered with ruby red enamel. The sickle and hammer are golden in color. Along the edge of the disc there is a white enamel belt with the inscription: “Excellence in the Soviet Army.”

At the bottom of the rim there is a small star with two symmetrical dots on the sides. The surface of the sign’s shield is red. At the bottom of the shield is the combined arms emblem – a golden star in a wreath of oak leaves.

The badge “Excellence in the Soviet Army” was worn on the front and everyday military uniforms on the right side first (if the formation did not have the honorary title of guards), and was placed at the distances established by the instructions for wearing the uniform.
