Text on the card:
“The Internationale” – the revolutionary anthem of the workers of all countries – was born in Paris in the June days of 1871, when the last battles on the barricades of the Paris Commune had just died down. The author of the verses is the poet of the revolutionary proletariat Eugene Potier. The verses were first published in 1887. In early 1888, they were set to music by Pierre Degeyter, a woodcarver.
The song quickly spread around the world and, translated into many languages, including Russian, became the international proletarian anthem. After the victory of the Great October Socialist Revolution, “The Internationale” became the national anthem of the country of the Soviets, and since 1919, on the initiative of V. I. Lenin, the melody of the anthem began to sound from the Spasskaya Tower of the Kremlin.
In 1944, a new national anthem of the USSR was approved. “The Internationale” has been preserved as the anthem of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Back of the card:
International
Music by P. Degeyter, Lyrics by E. Pottier, Russian text by A. Kotz
Arise, branded with a curse, The whole world of the hungry and the slaves! Our indignant mind is seething And is ready to lead into mortal combat.
We will destroy the whole world of violence to its foundations, And then We, we will build our new world, Who was nothing, will become everything.
Chorus: This is our last And decisive battle, With the Internationale The human race will rise!
No one will give us deliverance – neither God, nor the king, nor the hero, We will achieve liberation With our own hand.
To overthrow oppression with a skillful hand, To win back our property, Blow up the furnace and strike boldly, While the iron is hot!
Chorus: Only we, the workers of the world Great army of labor, Have the right to own the land, But parasites – never!
And if a great thunder roars Over a pack of dogs and executioners, For us the sun will still begin to shine with the fire of its rays.
Chorus: This is our last And decisive battle, With the Internationale The human race will rise!
